How to Make an Effective Life Insurance Complaint
Were you sold a life insurance policy and now realize it is not what you thought it was supposed to be? Are you furious with the way your insurance company is treating you and want to do something about it? Did an agent show-up at your house and sell you a policy but now you suspect you weren’t told the truth? Have you been paying premiums for years and years but the insurer just notified you that your policy is about to lapse?
If you’re dealing with one of these problems or something similar there are ways to make an effective life insurance complaint that gets you the results you want.
In our approach we use terms like life insurance fraud, misrepresentation, denial of death benefits, bad faith practices, agent abuse, and scams. Whatever you call the violation doesn’t matter, what matters is what you can do when you have a life insurance complaint.
First, you need to decide what you want. Do you want to get your premiums back from the insurer? Do you want your death claim paid? Do you want your policy reinstated on its original terms?
Next, make a time-line of events related to your dispute. If you called the company to speak about your dispute, write down the date of the call and generally what was said. The insurer will have a recording of the call and it can help resolve the matter.
Now, write one or two paragraphs summarizing your opinion and how you were violated by the insurer. For example,
When I bought my policy I was shown projections that I would not have to pay premiums after my age 60. I relied on that information as accurate when I bought my policy. If I knew it wasn’t correct I would not have bought the policy from your company. Now I’m told that I will have to pay double the amount or lose my coverage. The plan I signed up for has turned out to be different than what I was promised. As a consumer I was entitled to a fair disclosure by your company.
Then, make a list of any documents, conversations, materials or other facts that support your position — that you were harmed.
Lastly, write one paragraph about what you want the insurer to do to make the situation right. For example,
I wish to continue with my policy at the premium rate I was promised when I started the policy. Please make an adjustment on your end so my coverage stays in effect as long as I make my $100.00 monthly payment on time. Please confirm your agreement in writing.
You’ll need to either mail the complaint or fax it. Make sure you have the proper address, fax and department (see Contact list).

Our method gets right to the heart of the complaint and because we have nearly 30 years of industry experience we can talk the talk of the insurer’s Legal department, Compliance, Underwriting and Claims Managers. Our idea of resolving a life insurance complaint is full payment to our client.

Tell Others

Call your State Insurance Commissioner
The authority of the State Insurance Department is limited in many ways, but it is an option you may want to explore. Your State’s Department of Insurance has a Consumer Division which can investigate your Complaint and if they have authority to act, can get your matter resolved. One thing to be aware of however is that most matters cannot be resolved by a Department of Insurance and the insurer likely knows this already. If you do use this option for resolution the Department will contact your insurance company and ask for a response to your life insurance complaint. This service is free and available to all consumers. Here we’ve made it easy to get in touch with your State Insurance Commissioner by posting a full list of US State Offices.
Hire an attorney
You can hire an attorney to file a complaint against the insurer and its agent. Some attorneys will take a case on a contingency basis, meaning that little or no money is required up front, while others will require an up-front retainer. One thing to consider with regard to hiring an attorney is that it can be costly in the long run. Also, lawsuits that involve life insurance complaints can often take several years to resolve.
